The Repairer of Reputations is the first story in Chambers' collection of The King in Yellow and which contains the motif of the Yellow Sign. It is about a man, Hildred, and takes place in New York City in the 1920's. He keeps company with a deformed man known as Mr. Wilde, which it's inferred is the author of King in Yellow, and is known as the Repairer of Reputations. This means that people tell him ways in which their reputations have been damaged, and he, for a price, repairs their standing. In this position he hires many people to help him. According to him, he is in communication with 10,000 men, and that he could overthrow the country within 48 hours, which he plans to do.

The Ghost of Two Forks by Elmer Kelton: "A railroad was often a blessing to early Texas towns, but it could as easily be a curse. But other towns, once prosperous, withered and died because the Eastern money counters and the surveyors favored a route that bypassed them. Such a town was Two Forks, for years a county seat." What happens to a town when all the living leave?
The Defense of Sentinel by Louise L' Amour: "No sound…. No movement. No rattling of well buckets, no cackling of hens, no slamming of doors. Sentinel was a town of silence." An abandoned town, except for one person. 
"The realization he’d been in this canyon before hit him like being kicked by a mule. If he remembered right, it was about twenty years before." There are some memories you can never forget or outrun.
 What predator could claim as prey a fully-grown, great white shark? There is only one that comes to mind, but you see it's supposed to be extinct.

The House of the Nightmare is a short story by Edward Lucas White, originally published in 1906. The narrative follows a man who, after crashing his car, seeks shelter in a peculiar house for the night. The story is known for its eerie atmosphere. Edward Lucas White (1866-1934) was an American writer and poet, best remembered for his fantasy horror stories inspired by his nightmares. He authored several historical novels but is particularly noted for his supernatural tales, including "The House of the Nightmare" and "Lukundoo". The Elemental is a short story by Frank Belknap Long, included in his collection The Early Long. Long was a prolific American writer known for his contributions to horror fiction, fantasy, science fiction, and gothic romance. His writing career spanned seven decades, and he is particularly noted for his early contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos alongside his friend H. P. Lovecraft 
Two exotic strangers capture the admiration and curiosity of New York elites, each for their own reason. One is a brilliant conductor with a tail, and the other a beautiful member of a foreign royal family. But jealousy is not called the green-eyed monster for no reason.
First published in 1934, the story tells the tale of a scientist who conducts an experiment that brings dragons back to the modern world, leading to the destruction of humanity. Written by Guy Endore, who is best known for his novel "The Werewolf of Paris" (1933).

A Most Unusual Murder by Robert Bloch This is a short story by Robert Bloch written in 1961. The story combines elements of Jack the Ripper with time travel, featuring a mysterious antique shop that serves as a gateway to different periods where the Ripper's presence can be felt. The Haunted Chair by Stephen F. Wilcox What could keep a ghost tied to its favorite chair, familiarity or something nefarious?

Needle in the Heart by Richard Matheson: Therese and Millicent have a difficult relationship, and one of them finds only one solution for the dilemma. The Wonderful Death of Dudley Stone by Ray Bradbury The story revolves around the eventual fate of a successful author named Dudley Stone, and the reason he stopped writing at the height of his fame. A long time fan sets out to find the truth.  STORIES:
 They Bite and Mr. Lipescu, both written by Anthony Boucher, a prolific writer of mystery novels, short stories, science fiction and radio dramas. His story Nine Times Nine was voted the best locked room master of all time. Boucher founded the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and edited it from 1949 to 1958. He was a friend and mentor of Philip K. Dick. His first story was published in 1927 in Weird Tales when he was 15. It was entitled: Ye Good Olde Ghost Stories.
"The Lost, Strayed, Stolen" is a short story by M.F.K. Fisher. The story follows an American visiting an old friend in Britain and encounters spirits living with them. Fisher's tale is known for its subtle and chilling narrative.
The Upturned Face was written by Stephen Crane who is best known for The Red Badge of Courage.
Excerpt:“'What will we do now?' said the adjutant, troubled and excited.“ 'Bury him,' said Timothy Lean. The two officers looked down close to their toes where lay the body of their comrade. The face was chalk-blue; gleaming eyes stared at the sky. Over the two upright figures was a windy sound of bullets, and on the top of the hill Lean’s prostrate company of Spitzbergen infantry was firing measured volleys." Florinda by Shamus Frazer is a story about a child's imaginary friend and a mother and father coming apart under the weight of a sizable inherited property. Dead Men's Bones by Edith Olivier was published in 1933. When Southover church was under construction, workmen excavated a pile of bones indicating that the site had once been a burial ground. The remains are stored away en masse. A young girl is given the job of locking the vault for the night and walks in on a huge commotion. The bones are trying to sort themselves out. 
Tales of the supernatural have been around as long as people have been telling stories and it's at the heart of why ghost stories continue to fascinate, scare and entertain people, especially the old-fashioned ones.
 The Cairn on the Headland is a short story by Robert E. Howard, first published in the January 1933 issue of Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror. The tale follows two American academics, James O’Brien and Ortali, who visit Grimmin’s Cairn, a centuries-old monument at Clontarf, near Dublin, Ireland. The cairn was raised at the time of King Brian Boru’s defeat of the pagan Viking invaders in 1014 AD. As O’Brien and Ortali explore the cairn, they uncover a dark and malevolent force lurking beneath the ancient stones.
 “The most beautiful crime I ever committed,” Flambeau would say in his highly moral old age, “was also, by a singular coincidence, my last. It was committed at Christmas. As an artist I had always attempted to provide crimes suitable to the special season or landscapes in which I found myself, choosing this or that terrace or garden for a catastrophe, as if for a statuary group." So opens a story of Father Brown and the thief Flambeau.
 The story was published in Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror, January 1933. The narrative follows Canevin and Lord Carruth as they take an unusual short hop in the title vehicle, the Napier Limousine, to help avert a tragedy.
